Distant Souls: A Poem

Hey there you beautiful, awesome, magical being!  I’m back again to spread some positivity, joy and inspiration.  For those that do not know, I am a lawyer.  I know, I know, que the lawyer jokes in T Minus 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…

I decided around nine years old that I wanted to be a lawyer, although I did not go directly to Law School from college.  I took several years in between, and during that time, I worked in various industries from communications to mortgage to education, and each experience in its own way, molded me into who I am today.  I look at every experience as a lesson, never as a waste of time, even if I ultimately decided that the particular career or job was not for me.  I considered those years my years of exploration before “committing” to a career, whatever that means.

I have been practicing law for almost a decade, but I often feel that something is missing.  While I enjoy practicing law to a certain extent, it is not my passion.  My passion truly lies in writing.  I love creativity, all things creative really, and seeing a story come together.  There is nothing like taking a blank canvas and creating something from nothing.  Just like an artist with a blank white canvas, you are in awe of what they put together.  That is why I enjoy writing so much, and have written several original poems, a few short stories.  Well to be fair, one of the stories is over eighty pages, so I guess that is not really short.  In fact, I need to wrap that story up.  I’ve gotten so involved in that story, but now I need to bring it back around to end it, but I don’t want the ending to be a flop.

Have you ever been completely invested in a book or a movie, super excited, and the ending is just blah?  You’re like “what the hell was that?”  “Are you kidding me?”  “You mean to tell me that I wasted all of this time watching this movie or reading this book just for that dumb ending?”  I say all that to say, I don’t want that to happen with my stories.

But, back to the point of this post.  I want to share with you one of my poems that I wrote a while ago called Distant Souls.  One day, I just started writing, and this is what it became.  This poem will also be part of my upcoming Book of Poetry.  I hope that you enjoy it.

Distant Souls

In the distance he stands.  Still, like a sculpture, appearing as a mannequin.

His silk cream shirt dances against the gentle breeze.  There is a slight chill in the air.

She approaches him, methodically and unsure; her strapless silk red dress moving ever so slightly.  She has kind and gentle eyes, and a searching soul.

Is it him?”  Her soul reaches out to see if his soul recognizes hers.

“Cute,” he thought as his right eyebrow arched and his lips pursed into a crooked smile.  “She’s skeptical and unsure.  But I’m here.”

“What’s with that smile?  She thought.  “Did he recognize her?”

She gets closer.  Electromagnetic waves pulse through her body.

She stops.  He smiles.  The whiteness of his teeth blinding her.  She squints.

She continues walking.  He never moves.

She’s now within two feet of him.  She slowly lifts her hand to touch his cheek.  More sparks.

She looks down and he moves in closer to her.

Lifts her chin and looks directly into her eyes.  It’s him.  She is sure of it.

The one that she prayed for.  They embrace.

Distant souls have found one another.
