Do It Anyway

Stop allowing people to talk you out of something that you want to do simply because as they put it, “so many other people are doing it.”  Guess what?  That industry may have many people doing it, but it does not have you.  Too often we allow others to project their own insecurities and more onto us.  When we share what we want to do, we may hear things such as:

  • That industry is overly saturated.

  • Why would you want to do that?

  • So many people already do that.

  • The world doesn’t need another…

Listen, let them talk.  I cannot stand when people try to talk another person out of doing something because so many other people do it.  Guess what?  There are many people doing a lot of the same things from chefs to nurses to doctors to lawyers and much more.  Does that mean that you should not enter a certain profession for this reason?  Of course not.

When I decided to go to law school, most people were very congratulatory and wished me well.  However, there were others who were quite negative.  I would often hear things such as “the world doesn’t need any more lawyers,” and “lawyers are a dime a dozen.”  I could have let their negativity persuade me not to go but instead I forged ahead in spite of the naysayers.  I agree that there are many lawyers both in the U.S. and abroad, but the legal industry did not have me at the time, and my mind.  It did not have my character, my wit, my knowledge, my expertise, my intelligence, and so on.  I am unique and so are you.

Think about how many people speak about a specific niche area on YouTube for example.  However, each of those channels is unique in how they present the information, even though the overall premise of what they are talking about may be the same.  They each put their own unique spin on the subject, building a following that relates to how they present their information and their personality.

Whatever you desire to build or work on, I say go for it.  Do not allow others or yourself to talk you out doing something that is on your heart to do regardless of how many people already do it.  You, who could potentially make that business or industry even better, and your uniqueness is what is missing.  So, I say go for it and never look back.  If it was placed on your heart and the vision placed in your mind, it was placed there for a reason, so go forth and be great.
