Embracing You Fully

Embracing you.  Gray hair has often been viewed as a sign of aging, but now gray hair is seen as a symbol of beauty.  Even women in their twenties are flocking to salons to get their hair dyed beautiful hues of gray, or gray highlights.  I remember the day that I saw my first gray hair.  I was in my late twenties and of course I shrieked in agony and sadness and exclaimed, what the hell is this?

Of course, it was in the front of my hair, just to the left of center.  And then, in what seemed like less than twenty-four hours, ten more to my dismay had showed up, but they showed up to look like a gray streak.  It stayed that way for many years, and many people would tell me how much they liked my “highlight” which they thought I did on purpose but when I told them it was just gray hair, they could not believe that it had grown like that.  My mom told me that it looked nice, and of course I did not believe her.  But I guess it’s true what they say, mom is always right.

Since then, many more grays have shown up, enlarging the streak that I have, and some have started to form to the right of center, but the majority of them are still part of that original streak.  I used to dye my gray hair, which let’s be honest, is the most stubborn hair ever!  It would stay dyed for maybe a week or two before reverting and proudly exclaiming “I’m back!  Did you miss me?”  [Insert Sigh Here].  I would often get frustrated until one day I embraced it and said enough is enough.  I’m not dyeing my hair anymore to cover up this gray hair.  I started embracing my gray hairs and found it empowering to simply be me.

It is a blessing to get older; a blessing that not everyone receives.  As you are reading this article right now, there is someone who took their last breath a few moments ago.  I’m sure if they could have lived life just a little longer, they would not be worried about gray hair, or anything artificial for that matter.

Many women often experience dismay and thoughts of sadness at the sight of their gray hair, and I blame this on society.  Society often dictates that a woman with gray hair is old, whereas a man with gray hair, or salt and pepper hair is viewed as distinguished, dapper, and even sophisticated.

But many women have started to embrace their gray hair, which I absolutely love. They have combatted this idea that gray hair makes you look older by creating edgy, flirty hair styles, and many women are even getting their already gray hair highlighted gray so that they stand out more. It has become a style choice that is sexy, sophisticated and trendy. So be the beautiful, amazing queen that you are. Regardless of your hair color, show people just how fabulous you can be.
